Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport
Vimaliz Manfredo is an engineer who has also demonstrated much promise in her still ascendant career in the Navy. Her precociousness recently earned her a high-level position that provides broad exposure to the tasking and decision-making at the Undersea Warfare Combat Systems Department.
Ms. Manfredo began her Naval career working with a team of computer scientists on a training project for the Surface Warfare Officers School. After receiving a quote from outside contractors for the updating and extending the functionality of an existing software package, she and her colleagues found an easier, faster, and much less expensive solution that they could implement themselves, saving taxpayers over $200,000 right off the bat. This innovative solution also resulted in versatile electronic classroom training software that delivered all of the functionality required at a fraction of the cost.
Ms. Manfredo was also chosen to participate in the Sea Mentor Program, which includes a four-day deployment on an active Virginia-class submarine. This program engages engineers in hands-on operations to provide them with a more complete understanding of individual military and civilian roles in overall ship systems.
A graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Ms. Manfredo has also completed the Submarine Combat Systems Course at NUWC University, and has a DAWIA Intermediate Level II certification in System, Planning, Research, Development, and Engineering – Systems.
