2022 STEM Hero Honorees

Just over three years ago, Eva Vélez began her career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District as the Strategic Program Manager for the $20 plus billion South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Program. Her outstanding performance and significant achievements quickly resulted in a promotion to Program Manager and Chief, Ecosystem Branch, where she is responsible for administration, management, budgeting, reporting, and program execution.

Ms. Vélez is the Jacksonville District’s primary point of contact for the Assistant Secretary of the Army. Her ample knowledge of the Ecosystem/Everglades Program has made her the subject matter expert for the execution of multiple USACE projects that support the protection of the South Florida ecosystem and the Everglades. One example is the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, the largest aquatic ecosystem restoration effort in the nation, spanning over 18,000 square miles and designed to improve the health of more than 2.4 million acres. This is an unprecedented effort that will benefit many generations to come.

Born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, Ms. Vélez’s impressive achievements with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are just the latest in a career spanning over twenty years and includes both private and public sector work.  She first distinguished herself during 14 years at the international engineering consulting giant AECOM, and later founded and operated her own engineering firm.  Prior to joining USACE, Mrs. Vélez served the state of Florida as the Director of Everglades Policy and Coordination for the South Florida Water Management District, rising to the executive ranks.
