Joann Naim Gerena is a dedicated cybersecurity professional whose journey is marked by a deep commitment to empowering and inspiring others, particularly those from underrepresented communities. The daughter of struggling immigrant parents, Joann overcame limited opportunities to become a resilient cybersecurity professional via the military on a journey of self-empowerment and determination.  Her experiences highlight the  transformative power of grit, resilience, and unwavering belief in oneself.  Her example has been an inspiration to others helping them overcome challenges and pursue their dreams with tenacity and courage. 

Navigating personal challenges led Joann to share her experiences through mentoring, especially young wome. Early in her career, she became actively involved with organizations such as Women in Cybersecurity and Latinas in Tech, where she found a community of like-minded individuals committed to promoting diversity in cybersecurity. She spoke at schools, facilitated events with women and women of color, and forged partnerships between schools and organizations like Lockheed Martin's Women Impact Network and WiCyS Lockheed Martin Affiliate. Beyond the classroom, Joann served as a keynote speaker for the interns of Lockheed Martin’s Network of Women initiative, inspiring and mentoring over 120 interns with her story of success in cybersecurity.

Joann's dedication to mentoring high school students, particularly those who perceive the military as their best option, embodies her commitment to empowering and guiding individuals towards diverse career paths that encompass opportunities within the tech industry post-military service.  She focuses on equipping these students with insights into military roles that can cultivate skills relevant to the tech sector, and then encourages them to leverage military benefits and resources for continuous skill development. Her work has been instrumental to their transition from service to civilian careers with a focus on long-term professional growth.

Drawing from her own experiences and recognizing the transformative impact of her military background on her personal and professional development, Joann extends  her expertise and support to guide students who may not see alternative paths beyond conventional trajectories. With her induction into the fellow pipeline of Recognized Technical Talent, and her forthcoming pursuit of a cybersecurity doctoral program, Joann exemplifies a commitment to excellence, innovation, and leadership.
