2022 GMiS Luminary Honorees

Mr. Jose Limardo has had several technical roles at NASA and has evolved into an occupational safety and health specialist in hearing conservation. With this technical expertise, he has provided critical support to the Johnson Space Center’s acoustics office as its deputy manager for over a decade.

Mr. Limardo has also filled crucial roles as the deputy acoustics system manager for the International Space Station and Orion programs. His areas of expertise include measurement and analysis of acoustic dosimetry data and prediction of noise exposures for spaceflight crews. He’s been designated  to support the upcoming Artemis missions as well, which will return humanity to the moon.

Among his many career achievements includes his role in the creation of a new flight rule for space travel that reduces the ever-present risk for hearing loss. He served on a special working group consisting of medical and technical personnel from across NASA and from the space agencies of Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada to develop and implement the rule, which ultimately included two of his innovations: the noise hazard inventory and the noise exposure estimated tool. To this day, he continues to lead efforts to monitor on-orbit acoustic dosimetry aboard the International Space Station.

Growing up both in New York and Puerto Rico, Mr. Limardo makes it a point to engage students like him from underserved communities. He’s a prolific mentor both within and outside of NASA JSC, and he’s taught undergraduate courses in occupational health and environmental science as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston, a Hispanic Serving Institution.
