Corteva Agriscience

B.S., Agronomy, University of Costa Rica

Alejandro Muñoz began his career in agronomy at the most basic entry level in his home country of Costa Rica, where helearned every aspect of agriculture with dirty boots and a hoe while planting seeds by hand on the family farm, with sugarcane and rice as the primary crops.

Now, as President of the Latin American division of Corteva Agriscience — the Agriculture Division of DowDuPont — Mr. Muñoz oversees around 3,000 employees at 20 different production and manufacturing facilties and 20 research and development centers across over 10 countries. His responsibilities include seed, crop protection and digital commercial market strategies, products and forecasting in Latin America markets. Under his leadership, Corteva Agriscience has grown its business to reach an impressive $2.8 billion in sales.

Mr. Muñoz earned his B.S. degree in Agronomy at the University of Costa Rica and joined the Pioneer Hi-Bred International seed company, the predecessor company to Corteva Agriscience, after his graduation in 1981.

After nine months training in Texas, he returned to Costa Rica to become a Quality Control Manager for Pioneer, teaching local farmers to produce corn and sorghum seed under the company’s brand quality standards.

Soon, Mr. Muñozwas working for Pioneer in Chile and Venezuela before moving to Mexico where he led efforts to overhaul and rebuild the local division’s entire business operation as Operations Manager and eventually as Country Manager.

His next assignment wasas Southern Cone – Latin America Business Director, responsible for all activities in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Bolivia for Pioneer at a time when Argentina and the local division were in financial crisis. His ability to turn the business around during his five-year tenure led to a market share increase from 7% to 22% and a promotion to Regional Director for all of Latin America.

His success in Latin America led to a move to Geneva, Switzerland, where Mr. Muñoz became Vice President and Regional Director of European Operations and increased revenue by over 60%. After over two years in Europe, Pioneer brought him to the U.S., initially as Vice President of Sales for North America, adding Regional Director responsibilities just three years later.

In 2011, the newly renamed Dupont Pioneer appointed Mr. Muñoz to the position of Vice President – Americas Group & Global Production. He then served as
vice president, Global Commercial Business, from 2014 to 2017 before again being elevated to his current position as president, Latin America Commercial, with responsibilities for all Latin America commercial markets in the newly formed Corteva Agriscience agriculture organization.

A dedicated family man with a wife and three sons, Mr. Muñoz is a member of the board of trustees at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa and is a loyal supporter of the Iowa Latino Heritage Festival and the Hispanic/Latino Business Resource Group of Corteva Agriscience.
