As a globally recognized trailblazer in technical innovation, Dr. Lopez has expanded the boundaries of geophysics, seamlessly integrating it with various subsurface disciplines in hydrocarbon exploration and production, as well as CCS initiatives.  He is a consummate leader and communicator.

The groundbreaking geophysical technologies Dr. Lopez has spearheaded over the course of his career include distributed fiber-optic sensing for in-well seismic, innovative 4D seismic acquisition, On-demand Ocean Bottom Nodes, and low-cost monitoring of CCS projects onshore.  His adeptness in managing complex, high-profile projects across multiple countries underscores his exceptional capabilities as a leader.

Dr. Lopez maintains a deep commitment to mentorship and knowledge sharing, playing a pivotal role in nurturing talent within organizations such as the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Society of Petroleum Engineers, and Sociedade Brasileira de Geofísica.  A vast cadre of mentees past and present are succeeding across the globe.

Fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, Dr. Lopez is a charismatic and captivating international communicator.  Both in his writing and public speaking, Dr. Lopez can engage audiences of all backgrounds, technical or non-technical, and facilitates seamless collaboration and provides leadership to diverse teams across different regions, including the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Brazil, and more.

A Senior Principal Geophysicist and manager of Subsurface Technology at Shell, Dr. Lopez is credited with multiple industry-leading technology advances, focusing on developing new reservoir monitoring technologies that reduce costs and improve the quality of information gained.

His concept that fiber optic cables could be used for gathering seismic data during production operations went against conventional wisdom and has now become common practice, saving Shell and other operators millions of dollars in deepwater costs.

His current research focuses on piloting new technologies for monitoring the prolific pre-salt reservoirs which lay nearly 20,000 feet below the surface in the deep waters off the Brazilian coast.

Dr. Lopez epitomizes excellence, innovation, and leadership in the field of geophysics.
